Sorry to burst your bubble, but unfortunately there is no dog breed that don’t shed, or as they say in pet stores “Non Shedding Breeds” – Every single breed will shed hair, but depending on their coat type they shed excessively to very little.

It’s just a sale gimmick used by pet stores, but the reality is that even the so called “non shedding dogs” do shed small amount of hair which may increase during their shedding season. However, there are many small to big size dog breeds that are perfect for families that lives in apartments and who shed very little hair.

If you are planning to adopt a puppy or an older dog, then you must research about the particular breed that you are planning to bring home. How much does it shed? Exercise requirements, trainability and size are few important factors to consider.

Generally if you ask, dogs with short and soft coat that don’t shed excessively is the best breed for owners who are allergy sufferers. Less shedding dogs are medically termed as hypoallergenic which means their undercoat dead skin do not produce allergens that causes allergic reactions.

When you’re looking for a dog breed that doesn’t shed as much, make sure you opt for single coated breed compared to over-emphasizing on short haired and wired haired breeds, because that is more important in my opinion.

Yorkshire Terrier

“Small in size with a big personality” that’s probably is the best way to describe this wonderful breed. They are blessed with beautiful long coat that don’t shed, but during their shedding season they may shed a bit which can be controlled with regular grooming and brushing. They love going outdoors and interacting with people which makes then a highly sociable breed.

Dachshund

Those lovely droopy ears, lean body, innocent eyes and short legs make Dachshunds one of the cutest breeds. A purebred Dachshund come in different coat types such as long haired, short haired and wire haired. All 3 coat types are smooth and shed very little. Long-haired Dachshunds are known to shed a bit, but that is only during their shedding period. However, other two coat types don’t shed that much. Just like any other small dog breed, they also make an excellent family pet.

Boston Terrier

Shedding is never a problem with Boston Terriers, because their smooth and short hair that can be easily brushed and groomed. No excessive shedding, quite nature and family friendly characteristics makes them a perfect breed for those who live in apartments.

Shih Tzu

You may find it bizarre that even though it’s a breed with long and silky hair coat but they are categorized as “non shedders”. However, they need proper diet, physical exercise and grooming to keep them shedding free. Their long coat needs you to brush them in every 2-3 days, but if you are fine with clipping their hair close to the body, then you don’t have to brush their coats frequently.

Miniature Schnauzer

A perfect family dog with a lovely soft coat that doesn’t shed as much. However, you have to regularly brush their overcoat if you want to avoid even little bit of shedding. Majority of Miniature Schnauzer dog owners keep their hair trimmed.

Bichon Frise

With no distinct undercoat, Bichon Frise are considered as non shedding breed. Their thick and fluffy overcoat looks fabulous but it needs to be properly groomed and brushed otherwise shedding can be a problem for the owner. However if you brush them regularly, you will see no shedding at all.
